Zoar Village Garden

Grounds at Fort Laurens

Tin House at Zoar Village

Just thought I would touch on an issue near and dear to my heart.  A lot of guests coming to the Tuscarawas/Wayne/Holmes County ares are afraid to book a room for Sunday.  The main reason for the fear is there is nothing to do on Sundays because Amish Country is closed.  Please let me put your fears to rest.  I would like to share with you all the great things in the area that are in deed open on Sunday. For all the nature lovers out there fall is beautiful in this section of the state and we have numerous ways to enjoy the sites and smells of the season.  The Wilderness Center in Wilmont with its awesome trails through the woods and pond area is a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon.  Not to be left out is the Norma Johnson Center on State Route 39 in Dover.  The Norma Johnson Center has 303 acres with marked trails through woodlands and fields.  Take a hike and enjoy butterflies, birds and wildflowers.  Open 365 days a year dawn to dusk.  The Ohio and Erie Towpath Trail also has a 3 mile section that runs through Tuscarawas county along the Tuscarawas River near Zoar.  The Garver House will be happy to provide you with a list of all the hiking and biking trails in the county. Antique lover are you?  The Strasburg Antique Mall, Antiques & More and two resale shops are all located within the Village of Strasburg and they are always open on Sunday! Historical sites are all around the Tuscarawas county area.  Historic Zoar just 7-8 miles from The Garver House Bed and Breakfast.  Zoar Village founded in 1817 by a group of German religious dissenters maintains its 19th century looks.  One may visit the muesum, tour 12 restored buildings, walk through the formal garden and shop in some of the village stores.  Take a break and enjoy lunch or dinner in one of the two restaurants in the village. In between Strasburg and Zoar is the town of Bolivar where Fort Laurens is located.  Fort Laurens is the western most fort of the Revolutionary War.  On site is a museum, picnic areas and a trail that passes some of the Erie Canal locks.  Re-building of the fort is scheduled to begin in 2013. The Warthers Museum in Dover also open on Sundays is home of Master Carver Ernest “Mooney” Warther.  What started out as a hobby for Mooney lead to an amazing legacy.  Warther’s carries a AAA Gem Attraction with Triple A, he has been featured in National Geographic and Readers Digest.  Warther’s has something for everyone across all generations.  This is a must see in the Tuscarawas Valley area. Two more historical destinations in Tuscarawas County also open on Sunday are Historic Schoenbrunn Village and The Dennision Railroad Depot.  Schoenbrunn located in New Philadelphia (15 mins for Garver House) is Ohio’s first settlement.  Schoenbrunn Village features 17 cabins, a school, church, museum and theatre.  Along with the original cemetary, park and gift shop.  Picnic areas are also on site.  Coming this fall are the popular Lantern Tours and the Colonial Trade Fair. The Dennison Railroad Depot located in Dennison (25 mins. south) was awarded National Landmark status last year.  Clearly one of the best railroad museums in the country Dennison Railroad Depot was one of the largest railroad yards in the country, second only to Altoona, Pa in its day.  Dennison Depot also draws fame for being the only site of the WWII Homefront Canteen which enabled the National Landmark status.  Nicknamed Dreamsville USA in its day the Dennison Depot still offers free cookies and coffee to its many visitors from near and far.  You will not want to miss the Rails, Tales and Battle Trails train rides weekends in October.  Click on our link for ticket information. Shopping:  What trip would be complete without some local shopping.  The Garver House’s favorite cheese haus is Yaggi’s located on Stonecreek Road in New Philadelphia. Not only does Yaggi Cheese give out free samples but they will ship your cheese anywhere.  Kauffman’s Bakery located on US Route 62 (a beautiful scenic drive) in the Millersburg area features homemade pies, cookies, breads, jams, jellies and spreads. Above are just a small sample of area attractions open on Sundays in the Tuscarawas Valley area.  The Garver House is always happy to help you plan a fun filled Sunday in our area.  So do not be afraid to book you room for the entire weekend and see what the area has to offer.  The Garver House will provide you a good nights sleep and a delicious hot breakfast to get you going for the days outing.  All this in beautiful Strasburg, Ohio
